MARIE ANGE BORDAS
For Plataforma 2, February-March 2011, Brazilian artist Marie Ange Bordas worked with the Termales community, an hour south of the Chocó Base. Invited to consider ‘displacement' in relation to life in Chocó, Bordas went on to explore this even further during a two-week stay at Casa Tres Patios in Medellín.
In Chocó, Bordas developed a project with young people that explored the meaning of community in such a remote location. After training, digital cameras were circulated and the youngsters documented their lives in detail. Bordas then worked with the youngsters to create a map of Termales, which included stories and historical information about the village and region. Bordas also spent time in Chocó with an Embera family, best described as ‘self-displaced' from their community.
Two publications were then created: A map of Termales was printed on special paper to ensure it would survive the region's high humidity. This was given to everyone involved and shared with visitors. The second publication took the form of a diary of thoughts and feelings on visiting a country that had figured strongly in Bordas's imagination though her previous work about displacement and community in Brazil and Africa. In a simple and powerful way she addresses her innermost thoughts about these notions.
