Doual’art is a contemporary art centre in Douala, Cameroon, that organises a triennial festival of public art. SUD 2013 questioned the role of art within different strata of society.

Colombian artist Juan Fernando Herrán participated in SUD2013, joining architect Mauro Lugaresi to build a floating quay. Working with people from a district called Bonamouti they built a pier linking two sides of an estuary.

Herrán was also nominated by Fernando Arias for the Prix Pictet prize (2014) for his series of photographs “Escalas”. He was among the ten selected artists and he was subsequently commissioned to make a photographic series on the subject of consumption within Colombia’s indigenous communities.

Herrán’s series “Escalas” is reproduced in Better Than.
